The Weavers
The original Weavers consisted of Lee Hays, Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, and Fred Hellerman. They hit the top of the pop charts with their '45 of "Good Night Irene" in 1950, with "Tzena Tzena" as the B-side. The song stayed 13 weeks as number one on the charts and sold one million copies.
Soon after this release, anti-Communist hysteria associated with the Korean War and growing Cold War began to take hold and The Weavers were blacklisted. Decca Records terminated their contract and deleted their recordings from their catalog. They were denied airplay and could rent most venues. They had difficulty getting royalties. Hays and Seeger were called to testify before the House Unamerican Activities Committee in 1955.
