Brown (1912-2009) was an African-American soprano who starred as "Bess" in the original Broadway production of "Porgy & Bess". She reprised the role in the 1945 film "Rhapsody in Blue" (a fictionalized biographical film about George Gershwin).
She moved to Norway in 1948 & became a Norwegian citizen.
